I recently moved to a new website backup solution, called the Backup Buddy plugin. I’ve now got several clients setup with reliable, comprehensive website backups as well as staging and production environments.
Lots of moving parts.
But here’s how it went down – one technical obstacle after another, through no fault of Backup Buddy. There are simply lots of moving parts and dependencies.
Some hosting providers (worst offender – Go Daddy) impose strict resource limits on their accounts, which can make any backup routine time out.
Some clients have tons of massive, straight-out-of-the-camera image files that quickly run up their disk space, which can cause backup failure too.
Here is just a sampling of the support tickets I submitted to Backup Buddy (who bless their hearts, patiently answered every one).
- PHP memory limits
- Insufficient disk space/quota
- Operation timed out
- BB doesn’t push core WP software updates?
- Direct Error [ignoreSqlErrors]
- First backup fails
- Fatal error: Call to a member function get() on a non-object
If you never want to see error messages like these…
Turns out it’s just not simple or easy to setup a reliable backup routine. If you never want to see error messages like these, call me immediately to delegate this critical task and safely backup your entire website on a regular basis.
I offer a basic website maintenance package for $40/month that includes backups, software updates, and two-factor authentication (extra protection against hackers).
